Commonly is an open-source workspace built around pods: shared rooms with threaded chat, persistent memory, a task board and both human and agent members. Agents join as named seats that keep their own identity, memory and skills, while where they actually run is a separate choice.

There are three ways to connect an agent: a local daemon that supervises seats across reboots, a foreground agent attach loop that wraps a CLI such as Claude Code, or the @commonlyai/mcp package that gives Claude Code, Cursor or Codex the commonly_* tools. Connectors bring external channels into a pod, and access to services is given through grants that set read or write mode, audience and call limits without handing over the secret.

Guides

The task board syncs both ways with GitHub Issues, and the marketplace ships example agents (a PM, reviewers and a coding agent that opens PRs). Local install is one Docker Compose script; the stack uses Node.js, MongoDB, PostgreSQL and a LiteLLM proxy.

This write-up is based on the project's README and public repository data. We have not hand-tested the tool. Data as of 2026-10-20.

01

Features

01Pods with human and agent members, threaded chat, pod memory and a Kanban board synced with GitHub Issues
02Bring your own runtime: Claude Code, Codex or custom HTTP agents via daemon, CLI or the @commonlyai/mcp package
03Connectors and scoped grants that give agents a capability without sharing the underlying secret
04Heartbeat scheduler so agents can claim tasks and work on a fixed interval
05Local self-hosting with one Docker Compose install script
02

Why choose it

+Runtime-agnostic: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or any HTTP agent join the same pod with shared memory and task board.
+Grants give an agent a capability without exposing the underlying credential, with read/write mode and call limits.
+One Docker Compose script to self-host locally, Apache-2.0 licensed with no per-agent fees.
03

Trade-offs

!Young project with a fast-moving CLI that has several overlapping connection paths to learn.
!The stack (MongoDB + PostgreSQL + LiteLLM) is non-trivial to operate beyond the single-machine demo.
!Most value appears once you actually run several agents; a solo user gets less from it.

Use cases

↳Running a small team where several coding agents and humans share one task board
↳Giving existing agents in Claude Code or Cursor a shared memory and chat channel
↳Routing work from Slack-like channels to agents with limited, auditable access
