git-mcp
GitMCP is a remote MCP server hosted at gitmcp.io. You swap a GitHub URL for an MCP URL: `gitmcp.io/{owner}/{repo}` for a repository, `{owner}.gitmcp.io/{repo}` for a GitHub Pages site, or the generic `gitmcp.io/docs` endpoint when you want the assistant to pick the repository per request. The point is to give the model current documentation and code instead of whatever it memorised during training, which matters for new or fast-moving libraries.
The README lists four tools. `fetch_<repo>_documentation` pulls the main docs, `search_<repo>_documentation` searches them so the whole file is not loaded, `search_<repo>_code` uses GitHub code search, and `fetch_url_content` follows links found in the docs. Documentation is read in priority order: `llms.txt`, then an AI-optimised version of the docs, then `README.md` or the repo root. The generic endpoint exposes the same tools under `fetch_generic_documentation`-style names and needs the repository passed in.
Setup is a URL in your client config. The README gives snippets for Cursor, Claude Desktop (via `mcp-remote`), Windsurf, VSCode, Cline, Highlight AI, Augment Code and Msty. It says the service is free, needs no sign-up, stores no queries or personal data, only reads public content on request, and honours `robots.txt` on Pages sites. It is Apache-2.0 and can be self-hosted. Last push was 2026-05-08. This review is based on the README and repository data; we have not run it ourselves.
