The Exa MCP Server connects coding agents to the Exa search engine. Its headline tool, exa-code, is described as fast, token-efficient web context for coding agents: when the agent searches, it looks across billions of GitHub repositories, documentation pages, Stack Overflow posts and more to find the context needed to code correctly. Example queries include using Exa search in Python with livecrawled content, the right syntax for the Vercel AI SDK, and setting up a reproducible Nix Rust environment.

It is used as a remote HTTP MCP server at https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp, with configuration shown for Claude Desktop, Cursor and Claude Code, and Codex. The `tools` URL parameter selects which tools to enable; web_search_exa, get_code_context_exa and company_research_exa are on by default, and others can be added: deep_search_exa, crawling_exa, linkedin_search_exa, and deep_researcher_start and deep_researcher_check for longer research jobs. You can include your Exa API key in the URL. GitHub shows no licence for the repository.

Why choose it

+Gives coding agents search over GitHub repos, docs and Stack Overflow aimed at token-efficient context.
+Hosted at one URL, so setup is a short config block for Claude Desktop, Cursor, Claude Code or Codex.
+The `tools` parameter lets you enable only the tools you need (web search, code context, company research, deep research and more).
+Longer research jobs run through deep_researcher_start and deep_researcher_check.

Trade-offs

!It is a hosted service that depends on Exa's search engine, and putting your API key in the URL means treating that URL as a secret.
!Only three tools are on by default; the rest need to be enabled through the `tools` parameter.
!GitHub shows no licence for the repository, and the README describes capability in marketing terms ("agents that never hallucinate").
