The MCP Registry is the official, community-driven registry service for Model Context Protocol servers, run under the MCP project. It gives MCP clients a list of available servers, like an app store, and gives server authors a standard way to publish their servers with metadata about how to install and run them.

It matters both to server authors, who can publish once and be discoverable by any client or directory that reads the registry, and to client developers, who can build server discovery on a standard API instead of scraping lists. The registry is developed by a working group with members from several companies in the MCP ecosystem, and documentation covers a publishing quickstart, the live API reference and the ecosystem vision. According to the repository's status notes, it launched in preview in September 2025 and its API entered a freeze for stability in October 2025.

Getting started: server authors should follow the "Publish my MCP server" quickstart. Developers can explore the live API at registry.modelcontextprotocol.io, or run the registry locally with the published Docker image (`docker run -p 8080:8080 ghcr.io/modelcontextprotocol/registry:latest`).
