genoffice
GenOffice is a free, open-source alternative to Microsoft Office for macOS, Windows and Linux, from Genspark. It opens and saves native .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files and edits PDF, Markdown and HTML. Its key claim is byte preservation: only what you edit is rewritten, so files keep working in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
An AI agent sits beside each document. In Docs, edits arrive as Word-style tracked changes and every AI turn is a snapshot you can roll back. In Sheets, an in-house Rust .xlsx engine lets the agent build live formulas, pivot tables and charts rather than pasted numbers, and answers cite the exact cells used. Slides are generated onto the canvas and stay editable. Home-screen search covers file names and full text from a local SQLite index, and Ask AI answers across starred files with sources.
Files open, edit and convert on your machine, including PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint; only AI calls leave it, either via Genspark sign-in or your own key for many providers, local OpenAI-compatible servers included. A genoffice CLI and skill let Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other agents create and edit Office files without opening a window.
