DeepSeek-Reasonix (Reasonix) is an open-source coding agent that runs on your own computer. You describe a task in plain language; it reads code, edits files and runs commands and tests inside the project folder you pick, and shows each step. The model is a service you configure: a DeepSeek preset is built in, and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint is one config entry. You pay the model provider directly, and the provider receives what the agent reads.

The README says the project ships on two lines. Reasonix 2.x (Go, on the `studio` branch, now the default) is in active development and is delivered mainly as the Reasonix Studio desktop app, with a `reasonix` CLI in the same release. Reasonix 1.x (`main-v2`) is in maintenance and installs with `npm i -g reasonix` or Homebrew. The older TypeScript line (0.x) is also in maintenance mode. The same engine can be used from the desktop app, a full-screen terminal UI, `reasonix web` in the browser, or an editor through ACP (Agent Client Protocol) and a VS Code extension.

Configuration is declarative: providers, the agent, enabled tools and plugins live in `reasonix.toml`. MCP servers can contribute tools, prompts and resources, and the extension protocol adds sidecars. You choose how much it may do alone, from asking before every step to working within limits you set, with a plan mode that starts work only after you approve. Files changed by its edit tools are saved first so you can rewind by conversation turn. This review is based on the project's README and repository data; we have not run it ourselves.

This write-up is based on the project's README and public repository data. We have not hand-tested the tool. Data as of 2026-10-27.

Features

01Cache-First Loop: Maximizes DeepSeek's prefix-cache for extremely low token costs and stable performance across long sessions.
02Terminal-First AI Coding Agent: Provides an interactive AI assistant directly in the terminal with filesystem and shell tools.
03Persistent Per-Workspace Sessions: Maintains state and memory across sessions, scoped to individual projects or globally.
04Configurable Tooling: Supports custom skills (Markdown playbooks), MCP servers, and configurable web search engines.
05Cost Control & Transparency: Offers real-time cost, cache, and token meters, along with mechanisms for efficient token usage.
02

Why choose it

+MIT license, runs on your own machine, and the model is your choice: DeepSeek preset built in, any OpenAI-compatible service as a config entry
+Four ways to use the same engine: Studio desktop app, terminal UI, `reasonix web` in the browser, and editors through ACP or a VS Code extension
+Permission levels from ask-every-time to autonomous within limits, plus a plan mode that waits for approval, and forbid rules that always hold
+Files changed by its edit tools are saved first, so you can rewind by conversation turn without touching git history
03

Trade-offs

!Two active lines plus a legacy one make it easy to install the wrong version; the README says 2.x is still moving quickly and 1.x's core architecture is no longer extended
!Rewind only covers files changed by its edit tools, not what a shell command did
!The VS Code extension does not bundle the CLI and needs the 1.x CLI installed first
!You need your own model key, and the model provider receives the code and output the agent reads; the README also carries sponsor and community-group promotion

Use cases

↳Interactive Code Development: Use `/code` for proposing, reviewing, and applying code edits (SEARCH/REPLACE) directly within your project.
↳General Chat and Problem Solving: Utilize `/chat` for thinking partner interactions without filesystem access, leveraging attached MCP and global memory.
↳One-Shot Scripting and Automation: Execute specific tasks via `reasonix run "task"` to stream output, suitable for command-line piping.
↳Skill Authoring and Customization: Create and invoke custom Markdown-based skills to automate repetitive workflows or integrate specific logic.
↳Debugging and Troubleshooting: Leverage the agent's context and tools to identify and fix issues in your codebase.
