SmythOS SRE (Smyth Runtime Environment) is an open-source runtime and SDK for production AI agents, together with a CLI (`npm i -g @smythos/cli`). Its design borrows from operating system kernels: it gives agents OS-style abstractions for AI resources, so LLMs, vector databases, storage and caches are all used through one API that behaves the same across providers.

The README's example is storage: whether a file lives on local disk, S3 or another provider, the code is the same, and the same applies to vector databases, caches such as Redis or RAM, and LLM providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic. That lets you swap providers to compare cost or performance without changing business logic. It also advertises built-in security, observability and more than 40 production-ready components.
