kotlin-sdk

This is the Kotlin SDK in the modelcontextprotocol organization. It lets Kotlin applications targeting JVM, Native, JS and Wasm implement MCP clients and servers through a standard protocol interface, with coroutine-friendly APIs for handling protocol messages and lifecycle events. Servers can expose resources, prompts and tools, and clients can connect to any MCP server.

It publishes three Maven Central artifacts: `io.modelcontextprotocol:kotlin-sdk` (client and server together), `kotlin-sdk-client` and `kotlin-sdk-server`. In Gradle you add `mavenCentral()` and the dependency, and multiplatform projects can add it to `commonMain`; Ktor dependencies are documented separately. The README covers server features (prompts, resources, tools, completion, logging, pagination) and client features (roots, sampling).

Supported transports are STDIO, Streamable HTTP (recommended for remote deployments), SSE, WebSocket, and a ChannelTransport for testing. The README includes quickstarts for creating a client and a server, plus examples. For licensing it says new contributions are Apache 2.0 and existing code is MIT; GitHub reports no single SPDX license. It was last pushed on 2026-10-12. This review is based on the README and repository data; we have not run it ourselves.

This write-up is based on the project's README and public repository data. We have not hand-tested the tool. Data as of 2026-10-27.

Features

01Build MCP clients that can connect to any MCP server.
02Create MCP servers that expose resources, prompts, and tools.
03Target JVM, Native, JS, and Wasm from a single codebase.
04Use standard transports like stdio, SSE, Streamable HTTP, and WebSocket.
05Handle MCP protocol messages and lifecycle events with coroutine-friendly APIs.
02

Why choose it

+Covers both MCP clients and servers, with client-only and server-only artifacts if you need just one side
+Kotlin Multiplatform: JVM, Native, JS and Wasm from one codebase, with coroutine-friendly APIs
+Supports STDIO, Streamable HTTP, SSE and WebSocket transports, plus a ChannelTransport for tests
+Published on Maven Central under the modelcontextprotocol organization; last push 2026-10-12

Trade-offs

!Aimed at Kotlin and JVM developers; it is an SDK for building MCP software, not a ready-to-run server
!Licensing is mixed (new contributions Apache 2.0, existing code MIT), so read the LICENSE file for your use
!Multiplatform builds and Ktor dependencies add setup steps that the README spreads across several sections

Use cases

↳Developing LLM-integrated applications that require standardized context provision.
↳Building custom MCP clients to interact with various LLM services or agents.
↳Creating MCP servers to expose application-specific data, prompts, and tools to LLMs.
↳Implementing editor plugins or CLI tools that communicate with backend LLM services via MCP.
