excel-mcp-server lets an AI agent create, read and modify Excel workbooks without Microsoft Excel being installed. The README lists workbook and worksheet operations, formulas, formatting, conditional formatting, charts (line, bar, pie, scatter and more), pivot tables, Excel tables, data validation for ranges and formulas, and sheet management such as copy, rename and delete. The full tool list is in TOOLS.md.

It supports three transports: stdio for local use (`uvx excel-mcp-server stdio`), SSE (marked deprecated) and streamable HTTP, which the README recommends for remote connections. With stdio the file path is sent with each tool call; with SSE or streamable HTTP you set the EXCEL_FILES_PATH environment variable for the server's working folder, and FASTMCP_PORT to change the port. It is published on PyPI and MIT licensed.

Trade-offs

!No Excel engine means formulas are written but not necessarily evaluated by the server; check the results in Excel
!Remote modes need EXCEL_FILES_PATH set and give the agent access to that folder, so scope it carefully
!SSE transport is deprecated
!The README points to TOOLS.md for details and has few usage examples
