ha-mcp calls itself the unofficial and awesome Home Assistant MCP server: a comprehensive Model Context Protocol server that lets an AI assistant interact with Home Assistant in natural language to control devices, query states, run services and manage automations. Setup guides take about five to ten minutes with Claude Desktop (no paid subscription needed), with install scripts for macOS and Linux, a setup wizard for 15+ clients, and a demo environment you can talk to before connecting your own Home Assistant.

The README contrasts it with Home Assistant's built-in MCP Server, which is built on the Assist pipeline and only reaches entities exposed to Assist. ha-mcp is standalone and aimed at configuring, building and debugging: everything in Home Assistant is in scope, and it can create and edit automations, scripts and scenes, edit dashboards, debug automations from traces, read history and logs, manage helpers, areas, zones and groups, and handle backups, add-ons, HACS and the device and entity registry. Its complete tool list has 84 tools, and safety features include a Read Only Mode toggle, per-tool enable and disable, tool security policies that require user approval, and automatic backups of edits. A breaking change in v7.3.0 moved ha_config_set_yaml to beta. The code is MIT licensed.

Trade-offs

!It is an unofficial third-party project, not part of Home Assistant itself.
!84 tools with write access to automations, dashboards and add-ons means an assistant can change your home setup, so enable Read Only Mode or the approval policies until you trust it.
!Some tools are still in beta (for example ha_config_set_yaml, moved to beta in v7.3.0), so behaviour can change between versions.
