OpenChatCut is an open-source, local-first video editor that puts conversational agents and professional timeline editing in one workspace. Its README stresses that agents do not generate an unchangeable video: every edit is written to real tracks, clips, transitions, captions, effects and media in the project, so you can keep editing by hand and undo. Codex, Claude Code and a built-in agent can read, edit and export projects. It describes itself as an independent, open-source alternative to ChatCut, not affiliated with it.

To try it, download the macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel DMGs) or Windows x64 installers from GitHub Releases; the README says these are early builds and the macOS packages are not signed or notarized. To run from source you need Node.js 24 and npm: clone, `npm install`, copy `.env.example` to `.env.local`, `npm run dev` and open localhost:5199; `npm run desktop:dev` runs the Electron shell. Local H.264 export prefers VideoToolbox on macOS and NVENC on compatible Windows machines, and AI models, online media, generation and transcription only work after you configure the matching services. An MCP endpoint at `http://localhost:5199/api/external-mcp/mcp` lets Codex or Claude Code drive the editor. It is AGPL-3.0 licensed.
