Best MCP Servers for Browser Automation

Browser MCP servers give an AI agent eyes and hands on the web: open pages, click, fill forms, read the DOM and take screenshots. They split into two groups: servers that automate a browser (Playwright, Browserbase) and servers that inspect or debug a live one (Chrome DevTools).

Pick based on whether you need automation or debugging, whether the browser runs locally or in the cloud, and how much of your logged-in session you are willing to expose.

Quick picks

  • playwright-mcp — Microsoft's official browser automation server; the default choice for letting an agent click through pages.
  • chrome-devtools-mcp — lets coding agents debug and inspect a live Chrome; pick it for performance, console and network debugging.
  • mcp-server-browserbase — cloud browser automation powered by Stagehand; pick it when you need hosted browsers instead of running your own.
  • brightdata-mcp — commercial web search and scraping service with an MCP server; check its pricing and the target sites' terms.
  • browser-tools-mcp — Chrome extension plus MCP server that lets AI tools read your browser's logs, network and DOM while you develop.

How to choose

  • Decide between automation (Playwright, Browserbase) and debugging or performance work (Chrome DevTools).
  • Local browsers keep data on your machine; cloud browsers (Browserbase) scale but send page content to a third party.
  • Be careful with logged-in sessions. An agent driving your real browser can act with your accounts, so use a separate profile.
  • Respect site terms and robots rules. Scraping and unblocking services such as Bright Data are commercial and subject to the target sites' terms.
  • Check licences: most listed here are Apache-2.0 or MIT, but one extension lists no standard licence.

FAQ

Playwright MCP or Chrome DevTools MCP?

Use Playwright MCP when the agent needs to operate a site: navigate, click and fill forms. Use Chrome DevTools MCP when the agent needs to debug or measure a page that is already open, such as inspecting the console, network requests and performance.

Is it safe to let an agent use my logged-in browser?

It carries risk, because the agent can act with the accounts that are logged in. Use a separate browser profile with only the accounts it needs, and review actions that spend money or send messages.

Can I scrape any site with these tools?

Technically many can load any page, but whether you may collect the data depends on the site's terms, robots rules and local law. Check them before automating at scale.

How we compiled this list

Tools are chosen by hand from the projects in our index, favouring those we have reviewed in depth. Stars, licence, last-push date and install command come from each repository and are refreshed with the site data. We read each project's README and docs; we have not run every tool ourselves, so test before you depend on one.
