Trigger.dev is an open-source platform for building AI workflows and agents in TypeScript and running them as durable, long-running tasks. You write tasks with its JavaScript/TypeScript SDK, deploy them to Trigger.dev, and get retries, queues, idempotency, observability and elastic scaling without managing workers yourself.

It suits TypeScript teams whose AI features outgrow serverless limits: agents that run for a long time, pipelines that process media, or jobs that need browsers, Python scripts or FFmpeg. Tasks have no timeouts, can pause for human approval, can be scheduled with durable cron, and can stream progress and LLM output to your front end through Realtime and React hooks. Every run is traced and logged, with alerting on errors. You can use the AI frameworks and model providers you already rely on.

Getting started: create a project, install the SDK, define a task and deploy it to Trigger.dev Cloud; the open-source platform can also be self-hosted. The documentation and example projects cover common AI agent patterns.

Features

01Long-running tasks without timeouts
02Durable cron schedules
03Realtime updates and LLM streaming
04Human-in-the-loop (Waitpoints)
05Comprehensive observability, logging, and tracing
02

Why choose it

+No timeouts and durable execution for long-running agents and jobs.
+Retries, queues, idempotency, cron and human-in-the-loop built in.
+Realtime streaming to the front end with React hooks.
+Build extensions allow system packages such as browsers, Python and FFmpeg; Apache-2.0 licensed.
03

Trade-offs

!TypeScript and JavaScript only for task code (other languages run as scripts inside tasks).
!The smoothest experience is the managed cloud; self-hosting means operating the platform yourself.
!It handles execution, not agent logic: prompts, tools and model calls come from the frameworks you choose.

Use cases

↳Building and deploying long-running AI agents and complex workflows.
↳Implementing robust background job processing with built-in durability and retries.
↳Creating human-in-the-loop systems that require human approval or feedback.

How it compares

≈vs Temporal: Temporal is a multi-language durable execution engine you operate; Trigger.dev is TypeScript-first with managed deployment and real-time front-end integration.
≈vs n8n: n8n is a visual automation platform; Trigger.dev is code-first infrastructure for developers.
≈vs Conductor: Conductor defines workflows as JSON graphs with native LLM tasks; Trigger.dev runs your TypeScript code as tasks.
