The GitHub MCP Server is GitHub's official way to connect AI tools to the GitHub platform. Agents can browse and search code, analyse commits, create and update issues and pull requests, monitor GitHub Actions runs and diagnose build failures, review security findings and Dependabot alerts, and work with discussions and notifications.

It is useful for developers who want an assistant to triage issues, summarise pull requests, investigate failing CI or explore an unfamiliar repository. GitHub hosts a remote server at https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ for clients that support remote MCP (VS Code 1.101+, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf and others), authenticated with OAuth or a personal access token. A local version runs via Docker or a binary for clients that only support local servers.

Getting started: add the remote URL to your MCP client and sign in, or run the Docker image with a personal access token. Use `--toolsets` to expose only the capability groups you need, `--read-only` to block all write operations, and consider lockdown mode when working with public repositories.
